Common questions

1

How do I calculate 3D printing cost?

Material plus electricity plus waste. Material is the print's weight in grams times the price per gram (price per kg divided by 1,000). Electricity is the printer's watts times the print hours divided by 1,000, times your price per kWh. Add a percentage for failed prints and supports. The calculator does it and shows the cost per print.

2

How much does 3D printer filament cost?

It depends on the material and where you buy it; the calculator uses the cheapest price per kg we track for the material you pick, shown in the list. PLA is usually the lowest per kg of the materials listed.

3

How much can you print with 1 kg of filament?

Divide 1,000 g by the grams per print: about 12 prints of 80 g, or about 50 of 20 g. Add your waste percentage for supports and failed prints. The list shows how many prints each spool gives at your print weight.

4

How much should I charge for 3D prints?

How much to charge is up to you: cover the cost per print, your time and the printer's wear. The markup box above adds a percentage to the cost per print: 100% doubles it. It is a starting point, not advice for your market.

5

How do I find the grams in a print?

Your slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and others) shows the filament weight and the print time for each model. Enter those two numbers above.

6

Does the calculator include the cost of the printer?

No: only running cost per print. Our filament price per kg table compares material prices, and the 3D printer site has a calculator for total cost including the printer.
